The vicious cycle of psoriasis

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

I found myself reflecting on my psoriasis journey this weekend. In my last blog, I wrote about how I felt I had taken a few steps backwards, I am still working on that. But one thing I did notice is the slight changes in my diet have seemed to have a drastic effect on my skin. I know I have talked about eating healthy and the importance of that for keeping the itches at bay. But over this past week, I thought I would have something that I haven’t had in a very long time. I ordered a Taylor ham, egg, and cheese sandwich at a local bagel shop in town. Wow! It did taste good, but I felt awful a few hours afterwards. It didn’t agree with me and made my heartburn act up (which is worse than usual right now because I’m pregnant). This time around, heartburn has been a daily thing. Second, my psoriasis went from being slightly itchy to covering me up with

The choices you make about your skin

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

After briefly going through my e-mails and searching for a topic to write about, what came to mind was the following: Having psoriasis is a challenge, but one can choose to look at it as an opportunity to connect with the body.

Since my body has been crying out lately, I decided to try and re-connect with it. The reason I know it is crying out is because my skin has not been very calm as of late. However, I can tell you that right now re connecting with my body is quite a challenge as I feel myself being pulled in many different directions. It is also amazing how simple it can be to just slow down and look within. Right now at this moment in time when I do take the “time” to look within, I see myself going in circles knowing what I need to do and then making the choice to do it.

At every moment I have a choice, I can choose to be joyful for the opportunities I have or I can feel miserable and itchy. Today, I choose to be joyful, and to focus on healing, and I know from experience that when you focus on something you self manifest it into happening. I am nearing the end of my pregnancy, and I know the added stress of carrying a baby is not agreeing with me, I also know the complete joy and wonder I feel with this life growing inside me, what a true blessing from God. So in thinking about my blessings today, I add my psoriasis to the list because once again it has given me an opportunity to stop and get connected with that little voice that has been constantly trying to get my attention through the conditions of my skin. May your day be filled with many opportunities to be joyful.

Fighting the urge to put a sweater on when the sun is out

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

We are off to the park this morning. I am wearing short sleeves, and my psoriasis is a bit flared. Hannah has already asked what is wrong with Mommy and kissed my arm to make it feel better. I am really fighting the urge to put on a sweater. I know I don’t need one but I feel like I do. Instead, I will choose to find the joy in taking Hannah to the park and focus on the sun healing my skin.

Not too much else is new. I had a good check-up on the baby this week. All is well, seven weeks and counting until the big day. Have a great weekend!

The swimming pool beckons

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

We opened up our pool over the weekend – just need to clean it up a bit and it will be ready. Last year, I actually bought bathing suits, something I haven’t purchased in, oh, five or six years. I never really found a reason to, as I stayed away from exposing too much skin. Feeling confident last year, and also in the privacy of my own home, I purchased two. We had fun swimming all summer, and I even had friends over and stayed in my suit. That is progress.

This year, expecting a baby in about 7 weeks, I am afraid those suits won’t fit for now. My daughter is jonesing to jump in the pool. So I think I am going to go in, wearing shorts and a shirt. One thing I have noticed is the healing effect the pool had on my skin. I am not sure what it was that helped – relaxing, sunshine or the chlorine water, probably acting similar to salt water, like the ocean. I know salt water baths help considerably as long as I moisturize afterwards; otherwise, it is counter-productive. Having too-dry skin makes for more itching, and that makes my condition worse.
We also planted some flowers over the weekend; there is nothing better than sharing the beautiful colors of nature that God has so lovingly created for us to see.

Nature is so beautiful and healing, I always feel so much better after being outside, so if you are not having a good psoriasis day, my suggestion would be to go out and sit amongst some flowers or tall towering trees, and let those worries just float away.

Have a great day,
Gina

Legislation may help psoriasis sufferers

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

I was recently sent a press release about a bit of legislation that was amazing to read. It was about a bill on psoriasis that was introduced by Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey and co-sponsored by fellow New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg.

I was surprised to read the statistic that 220,000 people have this disease in New Jersey alone. I wonder where one finds that kind of information – I assume that these are the cases of people seeing dermatologists and using prescriptions. This bill should make it easier for everyone to be able to have access to the drugs that are now so expensive without a decent medical insurance plan.

The legislation states that the government should:
